I was in my kid's school assembly today. They've been learning about creation. So the teacher asked what the animals ate when they were first created. As a hint behind him on the power point was a big picture of garden vegetables with cucumbers right in the foreground.
A kindergartener raised his little hand, looked at the picture again while he did a few "umm, umm's" and then he had it:
"They ate pickles!"

Ellie, thank you so much for "mentoring" me through your comment on my blog. You have experience that I don't, and it's very valuable to us "newbie" missionaries as well as to those who pray for missionaries. Even though you and I are not on the same continent (I don't think :-), it's so interesting how the "rest of the world" is similar in many ways to each other and different from the U.S. Like I said as I was answering this question with my limited time living here, I was just writing through my observations rather than through talking with someone. The thing about asking questions to people who live here is that it's sometimes hard for them to explain what's second nature because they don't know where I'm coming from in my culture. Sometimes I get such short answers to culture questions when I know there's so much more there than their brief explanation, but there's no way for them to know the culture I'm asking from. Sometimes I get blank looks too when I'm asking questions. But with you knowing both U.S. and the "there" culture, you can speak a lot more to where it makes sense to me.
And Dan and I have the same philosophy as you and your husband about showing affection and consideration (especially him for me as that does not seem "normal" here) in front of our church family. This is a whole other subject, but wow -- I have been amazed at some stories I've heard that show what the husband/wife roles are culturally here. Even in each culture, the husband is to love his wife as Christ loves the church and gave Himself for her. But I won't go down that rabbit trail any more than I already have... :-)
