Skirts

I wanted to make myself a skirt, too. Whatever possessed me on my first attempt to try to do pleats, I don't know. Pleats are nice to wear, but they're sure a headache to make! I worked hard at them yesterday only to try it on and find out that while the hips fit, the waist was no where close! Argh!

So late last night, I had another thought on how to do it, and worked on it. Then this morning, I put the waist band on praying it would work, and ta-da! It was done. I like it. Light, airy, and cool. Now, on to make matching top, and then with the leftovers, I'll whip up my daughter another pair of shorts with a top to match.

All thsi inspiration is due to two things - Joy who did the "wear a skirt for a week" posts, and me finding one skirt that I really liked at a store that I should not even walk through... too expensive to shop it. I've never worn this length of a skirt before; just stuck to longer lengths, but this feels fun to wear. I'm at the place where I think that shorts just don't look that great on me - not for visiting, but capri's are at times too hot. So a fun length skirt seemed like a cool alternative. I like how this one turned out.

I love it! Very pretty! You're quite talented. I like what you did for your daughter too.

I wish I could sew like that. I'm in the mood for some summer skirts.

Too fun! I love that color, and the skirt is just great.

I have been wanting to make skirts so badly that I ordered some fabric and a pattern, and someone who is coming out here in the next couple weeks is bringing it all to me :-) So, I'll let you know how it turns out!

I found this "pattern"/tutorial online for a simple child's skirt - don't know if your little girl is still little enough that this would work (because it uses the width of fabric and that's it for how big around the skirt is), but it's very simple and easy. I am going to have to try it on Natalie one of these days. Here's the link: http://www.oliverands.com/blog/2008/08/lazy-days-skirt-free-pattern.html

Yeah, I think that pattern wouldn't look too great on my daughter. She's a bit round at the tummy, although not really chubby, and I'm staying away from anything with elastic or gathers in the front for her. Drop waists or flat fronts and elastic in the back work on her. When you get your material, let me know. I can give you a few pattern ideas that I use.

Oh, pretty! I like the detail on the bottom...great job! Pleats are hard. I don't think I look very good in skirts, but I finally found one I think is flattering on me, otherwise I avoid them...anyway, someone gave it to me. Maybe I should try to have another one made like it and see if it works as well...

When I was in high school, I wouldn't have been caught dead in the skirt length. My friends and I thought our skirts had to be either ankle length skirts or just above the knee and we preferred straight skirts. Now, that length and cut of your skirt is what is popular -- times sure change. I have come to love it. It's so comfy and like you said -- fun.

I too love the color and the design on the bottom. Great work.

It was the detail on the bottom that caught my eye when I was looking for material. I loved it.

Funny about skirt lengths - I remember when I wouldn't even look at one this length. That was for the "old ladies" clothes or fifties style housewives. I always loved the drop waist full style which was in when I was in high school, but then it went out of style. It was the design that fit my shape best, so I am glad to see it come back in. This one doesn't have much of a dropped waist, but enough.

I'm off today to make another one, without pleats!! in a white with teal blue and bright green flowers. Wish me luck!
